My mom almost never forgave her older sister for ter­rorizing her while they were growing up. Aunt Betty would stand behind a door waiting for my mother to pass by, then jump out and yell, "Boo!" No one likes to be startled, and that's exactly what can happen if some­one can come from behind before you realize they are there.

The easiest and most effective way to cure this sit­uation, short of repositioning the furniture, is to place a mirror so that you can look up and see the reflection of the door without having to turn around. If you work on a computer, get some putty and stick a small pocket mir­ror on the side of the monitor. Make it easy, make it simple; just be able to see the door.
