Feng Shui Remedies: The Shape of a HomeIf Your Home Has A Room Protruding From The Main Shape Of A House Whatever activity takes place in a room that is outside of the main frame of the home will feel diminished and unattached. It the room is a bedroom, an occupant may not feel nurtured by the bosom of family life. It's a feeling akin to being picked last for a volleyball team. You are on the team, but your status is minimal because you are selected last. The family structure in ancient China varied little from decade to decade. Most homes sheltered a nuclear and/or extended family unit. Divorce, unrelated roommates, home office, and same-sex families were as rare as a baby blue ox. For the most part, families consisted of two adults, children, and in some cases an aged parent or relative. Today living spaces should be sensitive to the needs of different configurations. It is not unusual to find a typical American family involved in separate non-family-related activities. A Saturday may find the mother catching up on her home-based consulting firms paperwork, the lather attending a class for additional certification, a teenage daughter at rugby practice, and a ten-year-old son engrossed in a Nintendo game. We applaud diversity, and our homes must help it flourish. In the preceding example, a room jutting out from the home's main shape would be an ideal location for the mother's office. It would provide convenience as well as solitude for concentration. As long as areas central to group living are integrated in a unified structural shape, the presence of an appendage may not be negative. Locate activities that are not central to family life in the part of the home that juts out. Home offices, workshops, and rental units are the kinds of uses well served by being detached. What is not appropriate for such areas are children's activities, kitchens, bedrooms, and gathering rooms. Related Articles
