In warmer climates, when the outdoors is used fre­quently for family activities like dining or lounging, out­door space becomes an integral part of the living unit. But in a cold climate, the base of the U will merely be a corridor that divides the home.

Use warm deeper colors, like reds, greens, purples, and yellow, in the part of the home connecting the wings. In most cases this section will house the common rooms, and these rich tones will draw family members together.

Flood the land inside the U with light at night. A visual connection to the other side lessens the divisive-ness of the U shape in colder climates.
